FAQ 3 Customer Support

How do I assemble the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap?

The Biogents® Mosquitaire™ comes fully assembled. All you have to do is to insert the catch pipe and connect the trap to the power grid.

Where do I position the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap?

Always connect the power supply unit to an outlet that is protected from moisture and rain. If you require an extension cord, please use the one that is provided by Biogents®. Under no circumstances should you use an extension cord between the outlet and the power supply unit. The following parameters for the positioning of the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap should be followed so that the tiger mosquitoes are attracted to the trap and not the people.

  • Find out where the mosquitoes prefer to linger. These could be shady bushes, damp corners of your garden, and their breeding waters. Breeding waters consist of puddles, rain barrels, or small water accumulations in flower pots, buckets, rain gutters, water containers, etc. Try and prevent these locations from being future breeding sites for the mosquitoes by filling them with small pebbles or sand.
  • The Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap must be positioned between these locations and the people. Place the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap in the vicinity of the identified breeding areas or rest areas of the tiger mosquitoes. Place the trap at an adequate distance from people. The preferable distance between the trap and people should be 5 to 10 meters.
  • Position the trap at the best area around the preferred hangout of the mosquitoes so that they have to cross the scented air plume that is emitted from the trap, or place the trap up wind from their breeding areas. Recently emerged tiger mosquitoes fly up wind from their breeding areas in search for a host.
  • Position the trap in an open area. Placing the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap in high grass or under bushes will impair the effectiveness of the trap.

The ideal positioning of the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap is visually described in the following animation (please click here).

Can I position the trap inside the house?

Definitely yes, because the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap does not use any pesticides or insecticides whatsoever and also does not require a compressed gas cylinder, for example a CO2 tank. However we recommend that you check beforehand if you like the scent of the Biogents® Sweetscent™ that you find in the trap, especially at the beginning when it is rather strong smelling.

During what part of the year do I set up the trap, and how long can I leave it running?

The trap should be put out when the temperature has risen over 15°C over a period of several days. At this time, the mosquitoes will be active and will soon begin mating. It is best to catch the mosquitoes now before they have a chance to reproduce and lay their eggs.

Do I have to protect the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap from humidity and rain?

No. Water that gets into the trap is drained out through the drain hole in the bottom of the trap. The electrical parts of the current trap are also basically unaffected by humidity or water. However, the trap should not be intentionally sprayed with water or submerged under water.

How do I change Biogents® Sweetscent™?

The Biogents® Sweetscent™ can be changed in two simple steps. The steps can be found in the Instructions Manual that was provided in the packaging.  You can find a detailed description under Changing the Biogents® Sweetscent™ (please click here).

How and when do I change the catch bags?

The catch bag along with the captured mosquitoes should be disposed of when the bag is almost full. In trade, a catch net, a funnel net, a gauze covering, and the Biogents® Sweetscent™ will be able to available for purchase together as a package. The steps for changing the catch bag can be found in the Instructions Manual that is provided in the packaging. You can also find a detailed description here under Changing the Catch Bags (please click here).

How can I ensure the mosquitoes that are caught in the catch bag and are still alive do not fly out of the bag while I am changing it?

Slightly pull the intake funnel out of the trap so that the catch bag is still within the suction current of the fan. Pull the catch bag off of the funnel net and simultaneously close the cord of the bag shut. Make sure the bag does not get caught in the fan. You can find these directions in the Instructions Manual that is provided in the packaging. You can also find detailed visual steps demonstrated here under Changing the Catch Bags (please click here).

How and when is the gauze on the top of the trap changed?

The gauze should be changed when it has become dirty and there is no longer a strong color contrast between it and the intake funnel. Additionally, dirty gauze does not allow sufficient air flow through. In trade, the gauze along with a Biogents® Sweetscent™, a catch bag, and a funnel net will be available for purchase together as one package. The steps for changing the gauze can be found in the Instructions Manual that is provided in the packaging. You can also find a detailed description here under Changing the Gauze (please click here).

Where should I store the Biogents® Mosquitaire™ trap during the winter?

The best location for storage is some place where it is enclosed and not exposed to winter weather. Do not store the trap for where it is below the freezing point for an extended period of time.
